Q Can you dye your own carpet? A Dyeing carpet has been around for quite a while and it is an inexpensive way to handle stains. However, it’s not something a homeowner should do. Hire a professional. It takes years to learn to dye carpet, including spot dyeing such as bleach. Don’t be fooled by ads that say it is easy to dye your own carpet. Q How long after dyeing a carpet can you walk on the carpet? A You can walk on a carpet almost immediately. Q Does the dye walk off? A No, the dye is the same type used when the carpet was made, it is permanent and colorfast just like the original carpet was. Q Will the dye last as long as the original dye? A Yes, the dye is colorfast, but it will fade again in time just like the original carpet did. Q Can my carpet be dyed any color? A No, when carpet is dyed the colors are blended. A green colored carpet, if red dye is added the carpet will turn brown. CARPET CAN NOT BE DYED LIGHTER, color is always being added when a carpet is dyed. Q Can I clean my carpet after dyeing a carpet? A Yes, the carpet dye is permanent and colorfast. Q What type of carpet can be dyed? A Nylon is the best to dye but wool can be dyed also in most cases, olefin and polyester can not be dyed. FABRIC or OTHER MATERIALS OTHER THAN NYLON Can Not Be Dyed. Q Do I need to clean my carpet first? A No, cleaning the carpet is part of the process. Q How much does carpet dyeing cost? A Normally carpet dyeing is about 1/4 to 1/3 the price of new . carpet in most cases. See Carpet Dyeing for more information. Q Can any spot be dyed? A No, for example: if you have a bleach spot on a blue carpet it will appear yellow, add blue dye and the carpet will turn green, but if the carpet is green, add blue and possibly a little red if needed and the carpet will be green again. If the carpet is not a red or blue and has enough color in the carpet it can be spot dyed. Most spots can be spot dyed. Q Can wood furniture stains be dyed? A Yes, most wood stains can be dyed but not all. Q Can furniture be dyed? A Some furniture can be dyed if made of nylon, wool, or cotton in most cases. If the furniture is made from plastic (polyester olefin etc.) furniture can not be dyed. Q Is all carpet dyeing the same. A No, some carpet cleaners say they dye carpet and they have little or no idea what they are doing. I heard things like a spot can not be dyed, you must dye the whole room. They are not carpet dyers and really have very limited knowledge and ability when it comes to carpet dyeing. Carpet Dyeing is our main business. Q: (from Maggie in Arizona City, AZ): Several pet stains in our light beige carpet just won’t come out. Replacing the carpet is not in our budget. Can I dye the carpet so the stains don’t show so much?
Ed: Dyeing carpet has been around for quite a while and it is an inexpensive way to handle stains like this. However, it’s not something a homeowner should do. Hire a professional. Also, when dying carpet the stains will usually be masked, but will not completely disappear. |
